Killis Almond, FAIA,
has been in private practice since 1978 and has been
actively involved in theatre restoration and consulting
since 1981. Mr. Almond continues to be involved in
theatre consulting and is a past President’s of the
League of Historic American Theatres. He has served
as a professional consultant and Architect on over 78
separate theatre projects and has produced
Master Plans and User Studies for almost
half of these.
Some representative theatre projects include: The Grand
1894 Opera House, Galveston, Texas; Paramount Theatre,
Abilene, Texas; Ritz Theatre, Tiffin, Ohio; Saenger
Theatre, Biloxi, Mississippi; Alameda Theatre and San
Pedro Playhouse, San Antonio, Texas; Fox Theatre,
Hutchinson, Kansas; Sunrise Theatre, Fort Pierce,
Florida; the historic Palace Movie Theater, Canadian,
Texas; and The New England Performing Arts Center,
Franklin, Massachusetts. Mr. Almond also participated in
the “HISTORIC THEATER CHARRETTE, A Restoration
Planning Initiative for the Modern, Opera House, and
Paramount Theatres, Boston, Massachusetts”.
Mr. Almond has been a six-year member of the Texas
Historical Commission Board of Review. He is past
Chair of the Friends of the Texas Historical
Commission and a past member and chairman of the
Texas Society of Architects Historic Resources Committee.
He is a frequent lecturer and has served as a Main
Street resource team member for eleven cities.
Mr. Almond has received numerous awards for the high
quality of his restoration work, including the Texas
Historical Commission’s Award of Excellence in Historic
Architecture for the restoration of the Paramount
Theatre in Abilene and the Old Main Building at Blinn
College in Brenham, Texas. He has personally received
the Texas Award for the Preservation of Historic
Architecture.
In 1999 Mr. Almond was named a Fellow of the American
Institute of Architects for his significant
contribution to historic preservation design work in the
architectural profession.
