PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The San Antonio Little
Theatre was created in 1927 as part of the little theatre
movement in the United States. On January 22, 1930, San
Antonio celebrated the official dedication and grand opening
of the San Pedro Playhouse, the first “city-built and
city-owned Little Theatre in the United States.” The
site selected for the Little Theatre was San Pedro Park -
the oldest municipal park in San Antonio, and after the
Boston Commons, the second oldest in the nation. A
comprehensive remodeling and expansion program was initiated
in 1993.
The façade of the
original theatre is a duplication of the 1847 Enoch Jones
Market House, which was a major center of commerce and
social exchange in San Antonio for seventy years. The
theatre has been in continuous operation since its opening
in 1930 and the San Antonio Little Theatre is currently
involved in a multi-phased project to complete the
rehabilitation and renovation of the structure.
The work completed to
date includes new roofing, restoration of the stone façade,
new doors, restoration of existing fire exits, new
electrical and HVAC systems. The next phase will begin
November 2000 and includes the rehabilitation/restoration of
the auditorium, lobby, ticketing and concession areas along
with total upgrade of the stage including new rigging, sound
and lighting systems. This second phase totals 1.9 Million.
Total seating capacity will be 392 seats.
The final phase will
include the rehabilitation of the Cellar Theatre (part of
the 1963 addition) with ultimate plans for a new Black Box
Theatre to be constructed behind the Cellar Theatre. |
