PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The Webb County Courthouse
was designed by well-known Texas architect Alfred Giles, and
is designated as a National Historic Landmark of State
Significance. The building was constructed in 1909 at a cost
of $40,000.
Webb County hired
Killis Almond to complete the exterior restoration and
interior rehabilitation of the building, which is being used
as office space for the Commissioners’ Court, County Judge,
County Commissioners and support staff, and support agencies
for the County Judge and Commissioners. Many historic
elements of the interior were discovered under added
finishes. The exterior loggias, which were enclosed and
subdivided into offices, were reopened and restored using
limestone to match the original detailing.
The entire building
was brought up to life-safety code and upgraded with a
four-pipe heating, ventilating and air conditioning system.
As much as possible, the electrical, heating, air
conditioning and telephone services are all integrated into
a building that has no interior hollow walls. All of the
interior partitions and walls of the original construction
are solid brick with plaster finish.
The building was
reopened to the public on February 22, 1997. It is currently
occupied and functioning well for the County and has been
recognized by the Texas Historical Commission as one of the
finest examples of “courthouse restoration in the State of
Texas”. |
